Development Timeline (Ongoing)

On December 4, 2008, the old forum website was shut down due to hackers. According to the project leader, they were not aware of the team member that had assisted in the hack. Since then, a new forum site has been launched and regained most of its former followers.

On November 2, 2009, the team released a huge media update to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the release of the original game. Also, the project leader announced a staff expansion to aid in development.

In early 2012, the Operation: Black Mesa team merged with the Guard Duty Team to form Tripmine Studios, allowing both projects to be developed under one roof. At the same time, they publicly released an update explaining the merger.

On May 1, 2012, the team released more media from Guard Duty for the second update after the merge.

On August 21, 2012, Tripmine released both the RPG and Automatic-Turret models in a small update. .

On December 8, 2012, Tripmine released the fourth media update after the merge following their reception of Mod of the Year for 2012.

On February 17, 2013, the team announced that both projects had received a Steam Greenlight for their eventual release. At the same time, they released more screenshots and concept art from developers. .

On March 22nd, 2013, another routine media update was released. .

On April 1, 2013, further information on the Greenlight was released alongside the announcement of an upcoming trailer. .

On May 17, 2013, they released the third and final part of the concluded Greenlight media update.

The video is the first to prominently feature one of the project’s voice cast, taking the place of developer Evil Good Guy as narrator. Large portions of Opposing Force’s Chapter 8 Biodome Complex are revealed, as well as a first look at a keystone Scientist character model.

Black Mesa was born of the discontent fans experienced when playing Half-Life: Source; when considering the living environment Valve created with Half-Life 2 using the Source engine, the original game fell far short of what many players thought could be done with the software, basically being a straight port, except for improved water and lighting effects along with the inclusion of ragdoll physics. Black Mesa was born out of two separate mod teams: «LeakFree», formed in September 2004, and «Half-Life: Source Overhaul Project», formed in October 2004 and led by Jimmy Headdon. Neither team knew of the other’s existence until Leakfree’s lead Jon Dominski began publicising in the Half-Life2.net, now ValveTime.net forums. After discussions between the two project leads, the two development teams merged, resulting in a team of 13 members by the end of December 2005. According to the developers, «Black Mesa: Source was built and founded on the principle that Half-Life: Source did not do the original title enough credit… [Black Mesa] set out to reconstruct the original title, giving it new environments, models, and abilities.». Development was officially announced on January 1, 2005.

Most likely due to the amount of publicity given to an unofficial third-party mod, Valve Corporation privately asked the producers of the mod to remove the «Source» part from the title to avoid confusion on whether it is an official Valve product or not.[source?]

On November 19, 2013, the fifteenth anniversary of Half-Life’s release, the developers announced that the complete version of the mod would be made available for purchase on Steam. There will also be a free version with minor differences from the paid version. On March 5, 2020, Black Mesa 1.0 was released, and the game was announced as no longer being in early access.

On November 25, 2020, the final “Definitive Edition” update, which brought numerous improvements to the audio, visual and gameplay aspects of the game, was released.

Co-op modeedit

Although the cooperation mode was said to be included in the mod, on March the 17th 2010, it was announced that due to the great amount of problems to port and make co-op code working, the developers decided to stop its development and focus only on single-player and deathmatch. It has been stated that since dropping the co-op mode, Black Mesa’s chapters have been redesigned with only single-player activity in mind, and that the new «level design and gameplay don’t lend themselves well to a co-op experience

Steam versionedit

On September 5, 2012, Black Mesa appeared on Steam Greenlight, and was officially accepted by Valve to be distributed via Steam six days later. On May 5, 2015, again at 8:47 a.m. MDT, Black Mesa was released on Steam as an Early Access Game at the cost of 19,99$/15£/19,99€.

The Steam version features a hybrid, alternated Source engine, new visuals, new voice acting, updated gameplay, stability changes, custom modding tools, integrated Steam Workshop, Steam Trading Cards, backgrounds, emoticons, 25 Steam Achievements, and the multiplayer mode, along with six deathmatch/team deathmatch maps: Bounce, Gasworks, Lambda Bunker, Stalkyard, Subtransit, and Undertow. The Xen portion of the game, omitted from the original Steam release, was slated for a December 2017 release, but was later released in portions in a public beta starting June 26, 2019, and released in full to the public on December 24th, 2019. The game later left early access on March 5th, 2020, being christened «Black Mesa 1.0».

Overview

The Valve Corporation originally had plans to port Half-Life: Opposing Force into the Source engine (announced at E3 2004) much like they did with Half-Life: Source, but after an underwhelming first look at the project, the creators of Operation: Black Mesa decided to pursue their own remaster of the game, built from the ground up. They began development in September 2007, one month before the release of Half-Life 2: Episode Two.

The project has grown considerably since then, with a dedicated development team of over 20 programmers, 3D model and texture artists, map designers and vocal performers. Similar to the drive of Black Mesa’s Crowbar Collective, the team is pushing Valve’s Source Engine to the limit with dynamic lighting, complex enemy AI and expansive additions to the original levels.

Final hours

While the situation at Black Mesa continued to deteriorate, a new and hitherto unknown foe appeared through the interdimensional tear, known only as «Race X». This new foe began to attack everything in the facility, including Xenian creatures, in order to clear a path for a terraforming creature, hoping to colonise Earth. After reaching Waste Processing Area 3, Cpl. Shephard and a contingent of HECU troops encountered and engaged a large Pit Worm. Shephard killed the creature by dumping toxic waste into its lair, and then proceeded to the surface. Upon reaching the surface, the remnants of the HECU, black operations teams, surviving Black Mesa personnel, and the two alien invaders were engaged in a vicious five-way battle for supremacy.

Forced back underground by the fierce fighting, Cpl. Shephard discovered the US government’s solution for the Incident: the black operations teams that had been deployed had armed a thermonuclear bomb in the , intending to destroy the facility and wipe out the invaders. Shephard deactivated the device, but witnessed a mysterious individual reactivating it; with his path blocked, the fate of Black Mesa had been sealed. Proceeding further, Shephard found that surviving Black Mesa and remaining HECU personnel were collaborating to prevent a large alien creature from settling and terraforming Earth for its own species. While the creature had killed the team sent to contain it, Shephard managed to blind and kill it, halting its invasion of Earth.

Shortly thereafter, the thermonuclear device detonated, destroying Black Mesa and much of the surrounding area, ending the conflict.

Shephard had awoken in a V-22 Osprey following his victory, far from the facility, confronted by a mysterious individual, seemingly affiliated with the government. The individual informed Shephard that he was a dangerous witness to events at Black Mesa, and while a directive had impelled the individual to dispatch of Shephard, he had instead chosen to indefinitely detain him after admitting an admiration for Shephard’s survival ability.

Reception[edit]

During its development, Black Mesa has received attention from several video game publications. It has been featured in articles from Computer Gaming World, PC PowerPlay, and PC Gamer UK magazines. Valve published a news update about the modification on Steam platform in 2007 saying that «We’re as eager to play [Black Mesa] here as everyone else.»

After receiving a development version of Black Mesa in December 2009, PC PowerPlay magazine said that the game’s setting «looks, sounds, plays better than ever before». The «subtle» changes from the original Half-Life were said to have a «substantial» overall impact. They also noted the project’s «frustrating» then-five-year development time, and current lack of release date, but added that the developers were making progress.

After the mod was released, early impressions of the game were very positive, receiving a score of 86/100 on Metacritic, based on nine reviews. The game was praised for its high polish, with many critics comparing its quality to that of an official Valve title.Destructoid praised the game for the improvements it made over the original Half-Life, saying it was «something that felt very familiar, very fresh.»

Behind the scenes

Marc Laidlaw’s brainstorm note from Raising the Bar.

Series’ writer Marc Laidlaw coined the name «Black Mesa Research Facility». He came up with several names during his brainstorming, apparently all based on actual locations. He states it is great fun for Valve to invent names for their creations, and then see them go out into the world and take on lives of their own. He also humorously states he is very glad he decided to go with «Black Mesa Research Facility» rather than «Black Butte», likely because of its similarity with the word «butt». These names, most of the time to be completed by the words «Research Facility», include:

Ted Backman suggested Black Mesa areas that were not included in the final game, such as a large fuel depot stacked with barrels of oil that would have forced the player to use hand-to-hand combat instead of their weapons, with creatures coming from the opposite end of the room, and a morgue full of tanks containing dead alien specimens.

According to Jay Stelly, all Half-Life maps were designed ahead of time on paper by a «Cabal» consisting of level builders, animators, programmers, and anyone else needed for their creation so the team ensured all the available technology was being used to its fullest potential throughout the game.

Half-Life: Uplink features two instances of security cameras following the player, not seen in any other game set in Black Mesa. Shielded cameras were also suggested at some point in a «Detectomatic 2000» security checkpoint. This is featured in Opposing Force, in the Santego Military Base.

According to old Half-Life builds, the facility was also to feature a particle accelerator.

As seen in the Half-Life texture files, offices were to feature more posters and photos, and not only a child picture in Gordon Freeman’s locker, although they might have been left in the files only as Easter eggs never to be seen in-game. The images include several public domains images taken by Valve on the website Public Domain Images, existing as far as 1996: one of Babe Ruth, one of a bald eagle, one of Thurgood Marshall, and a computer generated image of a carcinogen bound in DNA double helix put into a calendar; the retail calendar using the «Blue Marble» photograph of Earth also coming from that website. The files also include a cropped version of a picture of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X smiling while shaking hands, one of what may be J. Robert Oppenheimer, two of jet fighters, one of a windsurfer, one of the White House (used in the map «cs_office» in Counter-Strike), three images of Xena and finally images of Valve employees, such as a photo group of the whole Half-Life team (apparently on a baseball field, with Gabe Newell sitting in the middle), and probably Ted Backman and his girlfriend, probably current wife Vanessa Slough. Many of these pictures were heavily reused in Half-Life mods.

As with Aperture Science, the Black Mesa Research Facility / Black Mesa logo is directly based on the company’s name, appearing as a stylized mesa mountain against the sky.

The two different soda vending machines will deliver one can each time a button is pressed; each can gives one health point. As seen in the textures of the unique model using six different skins, the soda brands are «Dante» (a nod to Dante’s hell (Inferno) in The Divine Comedy)», «Glub», «Hai!», «Grope»,»Guthrie» (a nod to John Guthrie, who designed most of the Black Mesa maps), and «Yuck». The facility also features snack vending machines, but they cannot be used.

The cork board hanged to the teleport room door in Kleiner’s Lab features several schematics, newspaper clips, photos and sticky notes, among them the photography of a black mesa. This might be the mesa that gave its name to the facility.

The Black Mesa Research Facility bears many similarities with real world scientific facilities such as the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratory, the Area 51 or the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

Escalation

Forced back into the facility, Dr. Freeman was appraised of the Lambda Team’s plan to seal the rift, and they requested his aid in resuming the satellite launch. With the Black Mesa Transit System disabled, Freeman was forced to proceed across the facility on foot. Entering the , Freeman’s progress was halted by a large Tentacle which had nested in the silo. Freeman activated the necessary fuel and power lines and fired the rocket, killing the Tentacle. By this time, the HECU had identified Freeman as the scientist indirectly responsible for the Resonance Cascade, and marked him a priority target. Using the tracking devices in his HEV Suit, the troops set multiple ambushes along his route.

Intending to ride an old still-functional monorail network from to the , Freeman made his way deeper into the facility, where he found HECU forces clashing with a Gargantua, which easily dispatched the troops. Freeman lured the beast between two electrical generators and activated them, delivering a fatal shock which killed the creature, allowing him to proceed on. Despite the HECU’s frequent ambushes, Dr. Freeman reached the Launch Centre where he launched the rocket prepared by Dr. Green, Dr. Cross, and Dr. Keller. Following the rocket’s successful launch, Dr. Cross and Dr. Green manually raised and activated the displacement beacon, allowing Dr. Keller to initiate a resonance reversal. While the reversal lessened the effects of the interdimensional rift, it did not seal it completely, due to the interference of a powerful alien force from the other side.

Unable to neutralize Dr. Freeman and suffering heavy casualties, it became clear that the HECU’s attempted clean-up operation was failing. In response, the US government deployed a black operations unit to Black Mesa, with orders to destroy the facility with a thermonuclear device and silence all witnesses, human or otherwise. Shortly after the arrival of the black operations team, two Vortigaunts, designated R-4913 and X-8973 successfully retrieved several stolen exotic minerals for their leader. Meanwhile, Barney Calhoun managed to escape the facility after aiding Dr. Rosenberg in successfully establishing the Xenian teleport relay; using the old teleporters in the A-17 Labs, they escaped the facility in an SUV with their colleagues, Dr. Walter Bennett, and Dr. Simmons.

As Dr. Freeman attempted to make his way over to the Lambda Complex, he was ambushed and knocked unconscious by two HECU troopers. However, instead of taking him to the surface for interrogation as ordered, the two soldiers instead stripped him of his weapons and dumped his body into a trash compactor, intending to lie to their superiors that Freeman had been killed. However, Freeman, who regained consciousness just in time, escaped the compactor and evaded the HECU by proceeding through the Biological Waste Processing Plant, and negotiated his way through to the Advanced Biological Research Lab. There, Freeman discovered that many Xenian creatures were being forcibly contained and subjected to invasive experimentation and study, long before the Incident had even occurred. Dislodging the military presence in the lab, Freeman began his journey across the surface.

Meanwhile, the Xenian invaders had breached the surface in large numbers, turning the Black Mesa desert into a warzone. Xenian forces made use of extremely manoeuvrable organic aircraft to contest air superiority of the region; these aircraft shot down large numbers of V-22 Ospreys conveying HECU reinforcements to the facility. Despite the heavy fire support rendered by M1A1 Abrams tanks, M2A3 Bradley IFVs, and AH-64 Apache gunships, the HECU forces suffered heavy casualties in personnel and materiel, compelling them to abandon their mission and initiate a retreat from Black Mesa. Using the chaos to his advantage, Freeman successfully fought his way through the warring belligerents and reached the Lambda Complex.
