Pursuits
At night, the nature of gameplay changes mainly from the fact that the feature of Pursuits are in effect as Pursuits can only happen at night.
As mentioned above, infected such as Volatiles and Night Walkers have a cone of vision (similar to how enemies’ cone of vision works in the Metal Gear Solid series) of which players must avoid — On Nightmare difficulty the cones will be invisible to see and thus players will not know whenever they are at risk/close to being spotted by the night infected. Goons and toads still appear during the night, and they will have a much larger cone of vision (As well as any Virals that were active before night time initiated) than volatiles and night walkers, but the cone will be invisible. Being seen by them will also not initiate a pursuit, nor will they alert volatiles or night walkers to your position. However they will still attack you if given the chance. Be careful if you choose to fight them, as any nearby volatiles or night walkers may be drawn to the fight, possibly resulting in additional headaches showing up after intending to only eliminate a single threat. As a result, it’s usually best to avoid or ignore them, unless you’re ready for a fight, or they are alone.
Pursuits by definition are where players are chased/pursued by the night infected (Volatiles and Night Walkers). Pursuits can be triggered by one of several ways — One is being spotted for long enough/for the alert meter that Volatiles and Night Walkers have to be full and start chasing after the player(s). The other is to attack a Volatile/Night Walker or kill a Bolter (killing a Bolter will always initiate pursuits regardless of the method used or whatever skills the players involved may have). If attempting to kill a bolter, try to do it from a distance (Such as a rooftop) with a ranged weapon, so volatiles have to move further to reach you, giving you more of a chance to escape them.
Pursuits can also be evaded by one of two ways. The most common means of players to evade the pursuit is to get into a safe zone such as The Tower as the safe zones will have UV light systems on their entrances/around the perimeter which prevents the Volatiles and Night Walkers from getting in/pursuing the player(s) any further. The other method is to break line of sight with the pursuing infected for a long enough period of time of which they eventually give up the pursuit — This is slightly more difficult as the higher the levels of pursuits are, the infected will be far more persistent and unrelenting in their chase after you. After breaking line of sight for long enough, volatiles and night walkers will continue to search the immediate area. Their cones of vision will reappear on the map (Outside of Nightmare difficulty), but will have slightly extended range. Upon successfully evading a pursuit, the cones of vision will return to normal size, and you will be awarded agility points based on how long the pursuit was maintained.
Pursuits at night have various levels, from level 1 to level 4 — Indicated by the amount of vertical red pulsing markers on the left hand side of the minimap, as a visual indicator of how severe the level of infected are in their aggression and persistence in chasing their target(s). Some of these are fixed at points of quests i.e. in Extraction, the pursuit in the tunnel of Volatiles will instantly go to level 4, your first introduction to night-time mechanics starts you off at a level 2 pursuit, etc.
If being pursued by the night infected, shine your UV light at them or use UV flares — They only come out/come into effect at night for a reason. Night infected will also be easy to kill if led toward traps (bar Bolters as they will avoid traps as a whole). Technically, pursuits can also be evaded upon the ingame clock reaching 06:00, as all night infected will immediately stop chasing the player and either cower from the sunlight (Night Walkers) or will become terrified and run towards the nearest Dark Area (Volatiles).

Critical Reception
Reception towards the game was generally positive, with praise mainly regarding the combat, graphics, co-operative multiplayer, navigation, and the day-night cycle. Criticism was regarding the story, difficulty, and technical issues.
GameRankings gave the PlayStation 4 version 75.02% based on 43 reviews, the Xbox One version 74.60% based on 20 reviews, and the Microsoft Windows version 72.80% based on 20 reviews.
Metacritic gave the Windows version a 75/100 (indicating «generally favourable») based on 39 reviews, while the Playstation 4 version (based on 58 reviews) and the Xbox One version (based on 26 reviews) received a 74/100 (indicating «mixed or average»).
- IGN gave the game an 8.5/10. Praise was regarding the open-world, parkour mechanics and side missions, while criticism was regarding the characters (including the antagonist) and the difficulty in the game’s early stage. Both positive and negative was regarding the combat (for being occasionally clumsy, but increasingly satisfying) and the multiplayer (for having the matchmaking unstable, but enjoyable).
- Game Informer also gave the game an 8.5/10, praising the graphics, narrative, crafting system, melee combat and animations, co-operative multiplayer, side missions, and the day-night cycle. However, criticism was regarding the parkour system (for being unreliable), control scheme, and the firearm combat.
Locations
Room 194
«First, go change your clothes. I left some new ones for you in your room. You’re in 194.» |
194 is the personal bedroom, trophy room and storage area of Kyle Crane, assigned to him by Rahim. It is located on the nineteenth floor, on the right side of the elevator and opposite the Store. Above the doorway is a graffiti message which reads: «GUARDS», and usually has a guard sitting in a chair just outside. Through that door, past the bathroom and into the right door is where Crane’s room is. Over the course of Crane’s stay in Harran, he will participate in many quests for the survivors of the outbreak. When completed, Crane will sometimes keep a memento of the quest to remind him of it. Leaning against a gas heater is a guitar which can be used, but only two different notes are played (however, you may find a guitar lessons book at the School to play it properly). A desk has space for many items, and has a pin board where Crane pins images of the various ‘special’ infected he encounters along side a nametag, such as the Goon, Bolter, Volatile and so on.
The Gym
«If you’re going to earn your keep, we have to find out if you’ve got the skills. So get your ass up to the gym.» |
The «Gym» is another skyscraper beside the Tower, which the Tower survivors use to train their Runners. It is accessible via a , and was still under construction before the outbreak. To enter the gym, a leap of faith from the crane is needed, as this introduces the break falling feature. When jumping off the crane, the Runner will land on an assortment of garbage bags and mattresses.
Farm
«See, we’re going to start a vegetable garden on the roof — y’know, so we can maybe not starve to death — but nobody here really knows how to do it.» |
Blue Volatile
Artwork for the blue Volatile in The Following
Blue Volatiles are an evolution of the uncommon Volatile introduced with the release of The Following. They can be encountered anywhere where their lesser variants roam.
Compared to its normal counterpart, blue Volatiles are arachnidian in appearance, with more prominent fangs, a spiked carapace, and inky-black growths over its skin resulting in an even less human appearance than the normal variants.
They are faster, stronger and more resistant against melee weapons and especially firearms, such as military rifles and pistols due to their unique body armour similar to that of a demolisher. Their hits inflict more damage, and they can notice you through camouflage. They are also far more reliant on their highly accurate and highly damaging spit attacks, making them extremely difficult to escape from.
Fortunately, they suffer from the same weakness as normal Volatiles — their vulnerability to UV light can allow players to blind them and hold them at bay for a brief moment. The best way to deal with blue Volatiles is to simply avoid them where possible, use UV traps, and only fight back with the assistance of a UV flashlight, a height advantage, or extremely powerful weapons.
Overview
The Infected are people who have contracted the Harran Virus which spread throughout the entire city of Harran. They possess reduced higher brain function, attacking and subsequently infecting any living targets around them on sight, mainly with their arms or with handheld weapons. The combat system in Dying Light allows the player to dismember and incapacitate Infected, reducing their offensive capabilities or even completely preventing them from attacking.
Biology
The most common Infected share similar biology to humans. When striking biters with blunt weapons it is possible to determine that their bones are structured almost identical to uninfected humans. However, the Harran Virus can alter the infected’s biology when the sun goes down, increasing their motor coordination and sensory capabilities to make them incredibly deadly hunters.
Special infected are a much different story; in these cases, the Harran virus causes severe mutations, from the UV-vulnerable Volatile to the physically enhanced Demolisher. It is unknown what determines the rate at which mutations occur. However, it is speculated such would require either significant time to alter their biology or the mutagenic rate is rapid and requires vast amounts of energy to generate new cells, causing their increased aggression and hunger. This is, however, not confirmed.
Behavior
In Dying Light, the behavior of the infected depends on the «Day/Night cycle». During the day, the infected are sluggish and cumbersome, and demonstrate the inability to climb or run after the player (except for Virals). During the night the infected are stronger and more agile making exploration more dangerous for the player. There are also multiple types of Infected which come out only at night, like the Volatiles.
Prior to «Ascend Over Flesh»/During «Two Roads Diverged»
Sabit was a forest ranger within the Countryside, being described by Jasir as someone who always preferred living along with nature and always being of a courageous and brave manner. Jasir states that Sabit was so brave and fearless that he used to venture out at night with no regular protection i.e. UV flashlights and UV flares, even if there was a heavy presence of Volatiles within the areas Sabit travelled through.
Sabit lived in a hut towards the south of the Countryside, located away from the roads in the middle of an island.
Sabit also only travelled around the Countryside on foot, as opposed to how Crane would usually travel via use of his personal buggy, again showing how Sabit was «close to nature». This probably made travelling at night easier for him as Volatiles have a wider detection radius regarding those travelling in vehicles.
It is also discovered upon arriving at Sabit’s hut that his residence is only fortified with a boarded-up door and boarded up windows, instead of being protected by concrete walls, metal fencing/barricades and making use of UV lights which are present on every safe zone to prevent the Volatiles entering.
Мультиплеер и кооператив в Dying Light 2

Gameplay
Set in a map that is twice as large as the two previous maps of Dying Light, The Following, gameplay wise is similar to the first game, in which the infected are slow and fragile in daytime, and become aggressive and fast at night time. Players can use parkour movements, such as climbing ledges, leaping, sliding, jumping and zip-lining, to move between places and kill enemies. One of the new features introduced is a drivable Buggy. Players can use them to travel across the game’s world quickly and mow down enemies. It has its own separate skill tree, and weapons, including spikes, flamethrowers, UV lights, electrical cages and other upgrades can be added to the buggy to increase its combat abilities. The buggy’s performance and efficiency are affected by factors including the power of its suspension, engine, and brakes. Players can also choose from 40+ different paint job to customize their car, and must collect fuel in order to drive the buggy.
The game features several new weapons, such as a crossbow and a variety of new firearms such as submachine guns and revolvers. A new «bounty» mode, which split missions into three different categories: «Basic», «Dailies», and «Community», is introduced. The missions and objectives included in this mode change everyday, and players gain experience points by completing them. The game also features a new difficulty mode named «Nightmare Mode», which extends the duration of nighttime, and increases the strength and health of enemies. Every action made in this mode drains stamina from the player’s character. Players do not have to complete the base game before starting the expansion, but the character progression players earned in The Following will be carried to the base game. Similar to the first game, the game supports a four-player cooperative multiplayer mode. The asymmetrical multiplayer mode from the first game, Be the Zombie, also returns in The Following.
Upgrading and Modifying Weapons
Weapons are upgraded in two ways, Blueprints and Upgrade Slots — both of which can be found scattered across the game’s open-world.
Blueprints
- Main article: Blueprint
Blueprints can be applied to any weapon and don’t require an Upgrade Slot, instead using different crafting components. In addition to improving weapon stats, Blueprints can also add elemental effects such as Burning, Toxicity, Bleeding, Electricity, and Impact.
Weapon Upgrades
- Main article: Weapon Upgrade
Every Melee weapon in the game has Upgrade Slots that can be filled with a Weapon Upgrade. A weapon of higher quality will have more Upgrade Slots than a one of low quality.
If the weapon you wish to upgrade has an empty Upgrade Slot, go to your Inventory and select the Upgrade Mod you wish to apply. Different Upgrade Mods increase different stats (Damage, Rate of Fire, Handling, etc.) and some even increase multiple stats.
Weapon Dismantling
Once the player tires of a weapon or once a weapon is completely broken and cannot be repaired further, the weapon can either be sold at its value or dismantled.
Overview
The Volatile is an infected that only emerges during at night. Most infected can be easily killed when encountered by the player, however, this is not the case with Volatiles, and the player’s best options when confronted by one or, heaven forfend, a group of these monsters is to run to the nearest Safe Zone, preferably before the creatures know they’re there. Volatiles are capable of taking several hits from high powered weapons and can quickly cause significant amounts of damage.
Volatiles are broad-shouldered and slightly taller than the average Biter. Other physical markers include full-bodied nudity, exposed bone and muscle and a mandible jaw that it uses against non-infected humans. They can audibly be identified by their heavy breathing and loud screeches. Volatiles are extremely fast, and can navigate through the dark at high speeds, matching the agility of the player perfectly, scaling obstacles and buildings in the same manner. They have a special pounce attack that is very unlikely for low-level players to escape from. However, after the second mission, you will get a UV flashlight which can be equipped and used when a volatile pounces, pushing them back and giving you enough time to escape. Players at higher levels with the appropriate skill can shake their attacks off relatively easily, but a low level player will need an incredibly powerful weapon in order to have any chance of survival. In the event that a Volatile can see a player but not reach them, they will use a powerful spit attack similar to those employed by Toads. They often do this while the player is climbing to knock them off a ledge.
When time progresses to day, Volatiles will become frightened and start running to the nearest dark zone such as a tunnel or cave. While running for shade, Volatiles will always ignore the player, even if they attack them, until they reach a dark zone, where they will become as aggressive as they are during the night. If one were to chase a fleeing Volatile at sunrise, you can sometimes see them die from the sun before making it to a dark area.
Gameplay
While not much has been revealed so far concerning new gameplay mechanics regarding combat or parkour, it has been announced that the game will feature double the amount of parkour moves compared to its predecessor. Dying Light 2 will offer more player choice in missions, allowing players to make decisions that will affect the environment around the city. By completing a mission in a certain way, say for example siding with a certain faction, players will see a substantial change in the environment as that faction gains influence and begins to change the city in their own unique ways. Some factions may end up establishing order while others revel in the chaos.
Aside from factions, one new change discussed is that the encounters with actual zombies will be lessened. The city is mostly populated by the survivors and faction members during the day, and only during the night when everyone heads indoors do the zombies come out. Zombies can also be found inside, in dark uninhabited buildings.
During your journey throughout the city, you can modify weapons, wall run and jump, sprint across pillars, use the infected to break your fall, pull vent covers off and crawl through them and hide, use your binoculars to mark targets and use your stamina to break down doors (but it also drains your stamina when climbing). Be careful when climbing, zombies can grab you to pull you down. Dying Light 2 also features a ‘Tech Tree’ that separates proficiencies of ‘Parkour’ and ‘Combat’, earn EXP on each action and accrue giving skill points for new skills and upgrades. Reached a height you can’t get down? Use your Paraglider. You gain a grappling hook which you can swing from objects (enemies can grapple as well) or pull objects to you or even grapple mid combat to swing kick at an enemy/infected. You can also use the grappling hook as a final yanking boost when doing climbing and running out of stamina.
You start with way less parkour skills in the start and have to unlock them via skillpoints which also increase your character’s stats incrementally, it is unconfirmed if you gain HP as you level or if you unlock it as a skillpoint. The game offers a variety of different outfits that you can wear that also buffs your stats like defense,HP,etc. There might also be outfit sets that further buff your stats.
This game’s parkour and combat is incrementally harder too, as there are more enemy types and more moves too , it takes time to learn but it is worth it.
