#33 Yakuza Kiwami

The Yakuza series had a following but the series is a bit old today after first getting started on the PlayStation 2. Fortunately, the developers opted to bring the game series back with a few remakes under the Kiwami name. This game not only veterans a chance to replay the storylines once again but also provided modern gameplay mechanics for newcomers as well. It sparked a new resurgence to the Yakuza franchise as we were going through the storyline of the series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, a member of a high-ranking Yakuza family.

When Kazuma Kiryu was falsely accused of murder of a family boss, Kiryu ends up in prison. It’s only after a decade in prison that our protagonist is freed that he finds his old friend Akira Nishikiyama has become a powerful Yakuza boss and his childhood friend Yumi has since gone missing. Players are then going through a quest to figure out what has happened since he left along with tracking down Yumi. If you’re familiar with the Yakuza franchise then you know that this series has a very over-the-top action brawler combat system.

Deus Ex

Да, в нашем мире уже существуют «Приквелы продолжения» в виде Human Revolution и Mankind Divided, но именно оригинальная Deus Ex достойна нашего списка лучших Action RPG. Почему? Ну хотя бы потому, что в ней один из лучших по мнению большинства сюжетов в играх. Украшает историю тягучая атмосфера киберпанка, разбавленная известной многим стилистикой конца 90х.

Игровой процесс тоже способен удивлять даже на фоне современных игр

Ну, например, много в каких проектах герой способен функционировать, потеряв конечности? Помимо таких вот реалистичных мелочей, Deus Ex на сегодня радует построением миссий, в большинстве из которых никто не будет вести вас за ручку, услужливо помечая всё важное маркерами

Завершает список достоинств игры знаменитая система прокачки, которая разнообразна настолько что никакому «Скайриму» и не снилось. Ведь даже некоторые локации вы не сможете открыть, не имея необходимого навыка, а значит вполне рискуете упустить важную часть сюжета. И пусть внешне Deus Ex далёк от лоска своих потомков, именно его наравне с Morrowind многие считают одним из столпов жанра Action RPG, причём вполне заслужено.

Серия игр в жанре ролевой песочницы. Сомнительное начало с TES: Arena привело франшизу к культовой Skyrim. Bethesda отлично обыгрывает ролевую составляющую с Action и Sandbox элементами, и поэтому исследовать игровой мир, развлекаясь в свое удовольствие, никогда не надоедает.

Огромное количество модификаций, которые сопровождали серию со времён Morrowind, поддерживают популярность франшизы до сих пор, хотя с 2011 года новых игр не было даже анонсировано. Незамысловатый сюжет, атмосферно поданные побочные задания и полная свобода действий — основные элементы успеха. Сражения происходят в реальном времени и дают большой простор для экспериментов. Некромант и Лекарь в одном лице? Пожалуйста. Тяжело бронированный маг разрушения? Все в руках игрока.

Всегда можно победить противника, на несколько уровней превосходящего главного героя, с помощью реакции и смекалки. Bethesda всегда умело создаёт игровые миры, где начинаешь вживаться в свою роль, а после остаёшься в нем на какое-то время и жить.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines

Если вы поклонник action RPG и вам близка вампирская тематика, пройти мимо Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines — досадное упущение.

Представьте себе такой же мир, как наш, но более мрачный, населенный сверхъестественными существами, которые нас с вами ни во что не ставят. Местные вампиры – это не пустоголовые монстры, как в «Баффи», не надменные аристократы, как Дракула, и не несчастные мученики, как Лестат де Лионкур. Их нельзя ровнять под одну гребенку, у каждого свой характер и свои особенности, обусловленные личной историей и принадлежностью к определенному клану. Вам решать, к какому из них присоединиться.

Сразу после обращения в вампира вами начнет помыкать местный князь, другие видные деятели Камарильи попытаются использовать вас в своих интригах. Действие будет происходить в зловещей, а порой и не на шутку пугающей атмосфере. На своем пути вы будете встречать множество интересных персонажей. Чего стоит только Тереза-Джаннет с раздвоением личности, тзимицу, снимающий фильмы со сценами реальных убийств и украшающий помещение частями трупов, или бывшая модель, превращенная в лысое остроухое чудовище и вынужденная теперь скрываться от человеческих глаз.

От вашего выбора зависит больше, чем кажется, хоть сюжет и линейный. Сказать, что он интересен, это ничего не сказать. Едва ли вы сможете догадаться, чем все это закончится.

Серия Mass Effect

Одна из самых культовых франшиз в жанре Action/RPG, у которой даже имеется собственный всемирный день N7. В 2007 году вышла первая часть, с потрясающей боевой системой, графикой, ошеломительной проработкой мира и увлекательной историей. Хоть мастера из BioWare и назвали начало трилогии «Бракованным Шедевром», большая часть фанатов считает ее и вторую часть лучшими играми за всю жизнь бренда Mass Effect. Чем дальше шла серия, тем лучше была проработана экшн составляющая, которая, стоит признать, прекрасно работала с тамошней ролевой.

Последняя игра – спин-офф Andromeda, полностью меняет концепцию боя и добавляет вертикальный геймплей, чего не было в трилогии. Огромное количество комбинаций, система профилей и самый большой выбор вооружения, позволяют стать ей лучшей боевой системой в серии.

Наконец, в 2021 году вышло издание Mass Effect Legendary Edition, которое включает трилогию со всем ранее вышедшим контентом, обновленной графикой и поддержкой 4K-разрешения.

Весь этот отличный геймплей в Mass Effect всегда сопровождался интересными компаньонами, потрясающим сюжетом про спасение мира и тонной моральных дилемм. Конечно, четвертая игра во франшизе оказалась не совсем такой, какой ее ожидали фанаты, но если выбирать игру исключительно из-за шутерной составляющей, то Андромеда вполне может затянуть на пару сотен часов.

15 The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing Series

Turns out Van Helsing is ripe with opportunities for a loot-based aRPG title. At the moment, it’s at its third game, with each one offering upgrades and innovations from its predecessor. The first game is notable for putting a thematic spin on the aRPG or loot-based game genre.

It’s not often you get to see a haunted Victorian-age video game with a cool protagonist. The only downside with these titles is that aesthetic customization is a bit limited due to the title. You only get Van Helsing to play with.

#4 Mass Effect Trilogy

BioWare has had a strong line of iconic RPG titles in the past and one of the video game series that will continue to stand the test of time is Mass Effect. This trilogy was such a big deal back in the day as we were going through an epic adventure full of characters we’ve watched grow and the storyline adapts to the choices we made. While the third mainline installment didn’t end in a way that pleased everyone, which is a bit hard to do, it’s still a trilogy highly regarded, not only as a fantastic science fiction narrative but as an incredible RPG in general. You can go through the games individually, but this is one trilogy that might be best held off until we receive the remaster collection coming out later this year called Mass Effect: Legendary Edition which bring out an enhanced edition for players to enjoy on modern platforms.

Darksiders 2

Помимо бодрой боевки, вас ждут головоломки, прокачка персонажа и прочие фишки, за которые мы любим жанр.

Early Access action-RPGs to keep an eye on

Killsquad sets itself apart with its sci-fi setting and arcade-like combat. It strips away most loot and standard level progression in favor of jumping into enemy-filled missions with up to four players. Combat is much more focused on player skill and coordination rather than who has the bigger numbers and better loot, and thus depends on matchmaking and population (if you don’t have your own go-to squad) more than other action-RPGs. It’s also the best-looking game of the bunch. Hopefully Killsquad can build its audience as I’ve liked what I’ve played so far.

Last Epoch is gunning to be the next Grim Dawn, but where Grim Dawn uses Titan Quest as its base model, Last Epoch unapologetically worships Diablo 2. Map and enemy designs leave much to be desired but the classes, loot, and skill trees check all the right boxes. I especially love the option to specialize in certain skills, opening up entirely new skill upgrades. The unique time-traveling campaign is inspired by Chrono Trigger’s time-hopping story, as you work to reverse the apocalyptic end of the world. Last Epoch is a bit rough around the edges but is off to a promising start. It’ll supposedly be out of Early Access in spring 2020.

9 Lost Ark

When Lost Ark was first unveiled to the West by its South Korean developers, many Diablo fans were ready to jump ship. It was a truly phenomenal isometric aRPG from both a technical and presentation standpoint. It arguably had the most visceral and satisfying combat ever in an isometric aRPG. The problem is getting access to the game outside of South Korea.

For whatever obscure reason, the developers seem to be taking their time giving their game an English version and release despite the popular demand in the West. That won’t stop anyone outside of South Korea from trying it out; there are certain VPN and verification workarounds that can give users access to the Korean version of Lost Ark. Still, this will be at the risk of losing your account — that is until the Russian version arrives and eventually, the English version.

Guerrilla Games was known for the Killzone franchise, but surprisingly they brought out a brand new IP during the PlayStation 4 generation called Horizon Zero Dawn. It dropped the FPS genre in favor of a brand new open-world RPG that was set in the distant future. Mankind has fallen and what’s left of the metal era before has been long forgotten. Now humanity has dwindled to small native tribes that give way to the giant mechanical beasts that roam the world.

Players are taking the role of Aloy, a young huntress that was an outcast as a baby. Taken in by another outcast and raised, Aloy’s goal becomes not only working to establish herself as part of the community tribe once again but to learn why she was an outcast as a newborn and where exactly she came from. This game was such a massive hit that it was the first Sony exclusive title to be ported over onto the PC platform with a sequel currently being developed.

#36 Phantasy Star Online 2

Phantasy Star Online was a massive hit when it first launched and it helped move Sega Dreamcast consoles into the marketplace. While fans adored this online MMORPG, it was a game that eventually grew old. Fortunately, the franchise had a new installment released into the marketplace with Phantasy Star Online 2. The problem was this game launched in 2012 exclusively within Japan and it took several years before it finally found its way to Western markets.

Now that the game is available, players can go through this new Phantasy Star Online 2 game, which is broken down into season chapters for the storyline. Here players are recruits of ARKS a task force that monitors different planets for signs of corrupted force seeking to destroy the universe. This game is completely free so nothing is stopping you from trying it out, but just know that this storyline eventually bleeds into the latest MMORPG installment, Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis.

1 Path Of Exile

An indie game studio through and through, GGG, the developers of Path of Exile, set out to do a monumental task: to create a game that’s pretty much the spiritual successor to Diablo II. How’d they fare? Let’s just say Diablo III doesn’t hold a candle to Path of Exile’s depth and faithfulness to the Diablo II formula. Path of Exile has its own gem slotting system similar to Diablo II’s runes but instead of merely added bonuses, these gems gave the skills. The real star in Path of Exile, however, is the passive skill tree.

It looks like a circuit board and is a lot more vast than most players will encounter in an isometric aRPG. Each choice leads to a different character build and we’re not exaggerating when we say that there are countless numbers of character builds in this game. It’s also a free game, though if players want a more rewarding appearance, they’ll have to spend a considerable amount on cosmetics. It’s up to fans to decide if they’re worth it. Look good, play good…right?

Особо полюбили ее на родине – в Германии, а также в России, когда при этом, на Западе предпочтение отдавали более казуальной The Elder Scrolls.

В экшн плане лучше выглядит последняя часть – Arcania: Gothic 4, созданная небезызвестным человеком в сфере ролевых игр Йохеном Хаммом. Но больше всего Готику любят именно за ее РПГ составляющую и прекрасное обыгрывание симуляции жизни. Наряду с харизматичным и безымянным главным героем, обладающим черствым характером и едким юмором, первые две части были приняты сообществом на «ура».

Нельзя не упомянуть «Готику 3» – настоящий феномен по части преданности фанатов, которые бережно залатали дыры и доделали игровую механику за разработчиков. В отличие от первых двух частей, в 3 и 4 выпусках серии боевая система больше напоминает казуальный слэшер, когда в первых двух акцент идет на обозначение ударов и полноценное фехтование.

Кроме того, в разработке находится Gothic 1 Remake — ремейк первой игры серии с осовремененной картинкой и игровым процессом.

#19 Path Of Exile

Path of Exile for quite a few fans out there was the go-to free alternative to a Diablo video game experience. The gameplay was essential with an isometric view as you went through the game battling all sorts of hostile forces and a skill tree that was massive allowing players to spend points in unlocking attributes or skills that gave them a buff towards their preferable play style. When it comes to the storyline, players are tossed onto the island of Wraeclast, a location that has been cursed and holds nothing but criminals kicked off from the nearby island location of Oriath.

Here players are going through Wraeclast helping those in need all while defeating hostile creatures that have popped up within the lands. Of course, the storyline gets quite a bit deeper and with the various updates along with expansions, there is a ton of content to go through.

Best ARPG Games of 2021

Werewolf: The Apocalypse is an adaptation of the board game Werewolf, the events of which unfold in the universe of World of Darkness (Vampire the Masquerade). This ARPG will be released in the first half of 2021. According to the story, Cahal left his clan after he lost control over his rage, but was forced to return to his homeland to protect his family and kin. In human form, he interacts with other humans, in wolf form he stealthily sneaks past enemies, and in werewolf form, he fights with enemies. All three appearances have their strengths and weaknesses. The player will have to develop skills in each of the three areas to stop the Pentex Corporation, which is destroying the nature of the planet Gaia at the behest of the cosmic Force Wyrm.
Scarlet Nexus is an anime-style action-adventure role-playing game set in the original sci-fi universe. Scarlet Nexus is set in the distant future, when a psionic hormone has been found in the human brain, giving people psychic abilities. This discovery completely changed the world and people entered a new era. However, after that, the mutants called Others began to descend from the sky, feeding on humans. In order to survive, humanity began to gather people with strong psychic abilities in a special army. The protagonist Yuito Sumeragi is just one of the recruits of the unit. The hero must develop his talent as well as uncover the mystery of what is going on. ARPG Scarlet Nexus will be released in 2021 on Xbox and PlayStation.
Hogwarts Legacy is an upcoming multiplatform computer role-playing game developed by Avalanche Software Studios. The game is set in the fantasy universe of «Harry Potter» in the early 19th century. The player will take control of a student at Hogwarts Academy and experience life in an unusual magical institution. After entering Hogwarts, you discover your unique ability to perceive and master ancient magic. Whether to use this knowledge for the good of others or to succumb to the influence of sinister magic is up to you. Players will be able to take part in the fate of Hogwarts in 2021, when this ARPG is released on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.

#3 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, is one of those video games that just doesn’t go away, and for good reason. For a minute this was a title that felt like an ongoing meme as Bethesda continued to release ports for Skyrim on everything they possibly could. However, this is such a fantastic action RPG that you can easily get lost playing the title countless times. There’s the ability to craft up unique protagonists, countless quests to go through some of which were randomly found while exploring or reading in-game books.

So much lore and world design were put into Skyrim that it left us in awe of just what you would find in this lively world. We know it’s an older game now, the visuals are not going to hold up to some of the other games on this list, but you will be surprised by just how much this game could hook you in today. Fortunately, newcomers won’t have to deal with the loading times and bugs found in this game from when it initially launched.

#23 Kingdom Hearts 3

The Kingdom Hearts franchise was a huge hit when it first came out on the PlayStation 2. Players got an epic action RPG journey that was based around Disney IPs. Overall, players were going through the various Disney IP worlds as they fought off hostile enemies that were bringing darkness to the universe. While the narrative continued to get rather complex thanks to the series of spin-offs and side storyline’s available, it took the development team a pretty long time to get out the third mainline installment into the marketplace but we finally received the game in 2019.

Players once again stepped into the role of Sora as you battled heartless across a variety of Disney-owned worlds and characters. For instance, players would venture to the world featuring the Pirate of the Caribbean, Monsters, Inc., Frozen, Tangled, Toy Story, and Hercules just to name a few. Meanwhile, the combat has remained the same with players freely roaming around and battling against enemies using their various Keyblades acquired along the way.

#37 Dragons Dogma: Dark Arisen

Within Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, players are put into a high fantasy world where dragons have appeared, leaving nothing but destruction across the lands. It’s here that our protagonist has attempted to fight off the dragon but after failing to do so, the dragon consumes their heart leaving the hero as what’s called an Arisen.

Now your life has been dedicated to fighting off dragons and helping those in need. This game had a pretty decent following with fans waiting for Capcom to bring out another installment but so far that’s never happened. However, it’s worth pointing out that Capcom’s leaked list of projects which came from an online attack recently unveiled that a sequel is being worked on. We’re just waiting for that official announcement to come out at this point.

8 Grim Dawn

Some gamers might not have heard of this one but that doesn’t mean Grim Dawn is worse than others in this list. In fact, the opposite is more believable: Grim Dawn is a sleeper hit. It has one of the more compelling plots to an isometric aRPG ever and, of course, a dizzying loot system. Still, Grim Dawn’s signature lies in its class customization.

After leveling up a few more times after selecting their initial class in Grim Dawn, gamers will be presented with the dual-class system. It essentially lets them combine the skills and dispositions of two classes (no matter how different they are) and create something that’s entirely unique. Not only does this add to replay value, but it also gives players more means to experiment with gameplay.

Мир Mount & Blade – это альтернативное средневековье без какой-либо магии и прочих сверхъестественных штук. Все квесты направлены на то, чтобы заработать денег, получить ценный опыт или улучшить отношения с какими-нибудь персонажами. Все как в реальной жизни.

Несмотря на множество придирок, по мнению критиков боевая система игры отображает реалии средневековых сражений лучше, чем любой другой проект до нее, и вообще назвали Mount & Blade лучшей ролевой игрой со средневековым сеттингом.

Серия The Witcher

О трилогии, посвященной приключениям ведьмака Геральта, знает, наверное, каждый, кто причисляет себя к геймерам. Поляки из CD Projekt RED сумели на голом энтузиазме создать масштабную вселенную, в основу которой лег одноименный фэнтезийный цикл за авторством Анджея Сапковского.

Интересные факты: Первоначальный капитал основатели CD Projekt сколотили на продаже пиратской продукции, лицензию на игры по «Ведьмаку» приобрели у Сапковского за копейки ($4000), а движок для первой части игры им любезно одолжила BioWare.

Игра The Witcher стала своеобразной (и весьма успешной) «пробой пера» для разработчиков, сиквел закрепил успех, ну а третья часть, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, по праву может считаться одной из лучших игр не только в жанре, но и всей индустрии. Отличный сюжет, ставящий точку во всем цикле (в том числе книжном), интересные квесты, шикарная графика и невероятно харизматичный главный герой – все это делает Wild Hunt почти идеальным приключением (да, недостатки есть везде, и здесь тоже, но они слишком незначительны) для каждого геймера.

3 Titan Quest

Grim Dawn’s intuitive dual-class system was first featured in Titan Quest. It even came from the same game studio. First released back in 2006, fan demand earned the game a re-release in 2016 with better graphics and the same gameplay.

Many fans agree that Titan Quest is an isometric aRPG done right. The loot was compelling, the story was easy to understand, and the customization was rewarding. Not to mention it was set in a Greek world setting then transitioned into Egypt and eventually into Asia. Basically, it’s a globe-trotting journey for the best loot ever… and also to kill the Titans of Olympus causing havoc on Earth.

#24 Grim Dawn

Similar to Path of Exile and Diablo 3, Grim Dawn is a hack and slash isometric RPG. Within the game, players find that humanity is nearing extinction thanks to a horrific war between two supernatural forces that both see humanity as either a resource or simply a target to cleansing from the world. Players are essentially tossed into this world to see just how they will survive or potentially shape this new reality for the human race. As you’d likely expect, this game has multiple different classes to start as, a skill tree to better hone in your skills, and even cooperative gameplay support to play with your friends.

#2 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

CD Projekt Red was at their height with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. So many fans around the world couldn’t wait to dive into this conclusion and it was clear that the developers took a ton of time building up this game. Visually the game was stunning at the time, there were countless quests and quite a few of them were so well written.

Fans looking for a high-fantasy RPG can’t get much better than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The only problem some players may have today is if they go into this title blind without any backhand knowledge of this IP. So you might want to do yourself a favor and give a couple of YouTube videos a watch that helps breakdown the history of the past two installments to get you started for The Witcher 3 along with its DLC expansions.

Vampyr

Vampyr – это игра, исходя из названия, про вампиров. Представителем расы кровососов становится главный герой, врач, прошедший ужасы Первой мировой войны и вернувшийся в родной Лондон. Здесь ему предстоит познать особенности жизни в новом амплуа, а также остановить страшную эпидемию.

В этой игре вас ждут не только сражения с вампирами (хотя и их здесь немало), но также сложные моральные дилеммы и проблемы выборов и последствий. Одно из них – стоит ли пить кровь невинных, чтобы становиться сильнее, или же не вкусить невиданного могущества, но при этом спасти немало жизней. Что выберете вы?

#20 The Outer Worlds

Speaking of Obsidian Entertainment, we also have The Outer Worlds, a game that was crafted up to play a bit like their time with Fallout New Vegas. Obsidian Entertainment has expertise with RPG titles and one of their last video games released before being acquired by Microsoft was The Outer Worlds, a title that put players into the future where you’re main campaign storyline is torn between two pathways, aiding a labeled mad scientist who rescued you from years of frozen slumber or helping the government control in tracking the scientist down.

Besides the main campaign, players have a series of planets they could visit which holds different communities to explore and characters to meet. Again, similar to Fallout, there are a ton of side quests you could accept and help which would reward players with in-game currency, XP, or gear. Likewise, these missions rely on players making some tough decisions such as choosing which community is rewarded with power for survival, but that’s all you’re going to get out of me. The rest of the big moral choices will be left to you as you progress through the game.
