Economics
Prices go up or down based on supply and demand. Each port has limited possibilities as to what raw resources may be harvested there and many ports have specific demands. Ship construction requires specific resources that can be captured and protected from enemies. Every port has its own supply and demand patterns providing the trading opportunities for the players. You can build any ship in the game the way you want it: tweaking its battle and sailing performance during construction. The game features player constructed production buildings and player crafting is an integral part of supplying what’s demanded
The game economy has undergone some major changes and is still being frequently adjusted. Interaction with the economy is accomplished through the port Home screen menus.
Trade
Every Port has a shop that buys and sells raw commodities and manufactured goods. Players may trade with other players in the same port, and players may also place Buy and Sell contracts for goods and in this way influence the supply and demand dynamics of the game economy directly. Contract sales are indicated on the Shop screen with small boxed ‘i’ icons following the names of the Goods. Selecting that icon will display the player contracts for that specific Good. Note: to Claim/Cancel a contract and get your gold and/or the goods, use the ‘Your contracts’ — ‘Claim’ menu from within the port where the contract was created.
The Trader tool may also be used to both find and interrogate pricing (stored at server maintenance, prices are not live).
Outposts
To do more than just visit and trade outside one’s home port, players may invest and develop up to 8 outposts. Beyond their home (starting) port, players must have or buy a port Permit, then pay for the construction of an Outpost. This gives access to docking facilities for individual ships and fleets, and a warehouse for storage and crafting operations. An Outpost facility also allows erecting other Buildings for producing the resources available to (already sourced by) that port.
Production
Players may build up to 5 production buildings in ports where they have outposts.
Once built, these buildings will slowly begin to produce resources that can then be «gathered» at a small cost
Once gathered the goods are stored in the player’s warehouse and may be used for crafting, sold in the local market, or loaded onto a player’s ship for sale elsewhere.
Crafting
Players are responsible for crafting a wide variety of goods in-game for sale or for use or as components in other items.
Among the items players can craft are

Sea Combat and Gunnery
Realistic ballistics and cannon performance of the period. Every cannonball is tracked in the air and after it hits the target. One shot can hit the stern, damage the rudder, then hit the cannon carriage, injure crew, ricochet from the floor and hit the opposite side. Listing and wind affects the shooting distance and will require change of tactics.
Weapons: All major types of naval artillery are implemented: from long guns to carronades, and mortars. Fort and land batteries provide support during port battles.
Damage model: Leaks, splinters, de-masting, raking, fires and all other hazards of the era are factors in the game. Damaged ship fittings and modules will change behavior of the ship.
Combat Sailing
Sailing is simple and works similar to guns. You have a % of crew required to work sails and if you don’t do any other tasks you will not suffer any penalties to speeds of raising sails or turning yards. If you have enough crew you can work sails and man guns at the same time.
Crew Management
All main tasks have a certain allocation of crew depending on ship type.
All main tasks have a minimum and optimal size of crew required.
- Optimal crew – task will be fulfilled at max speed
- Minimal crew – task will be fulfilled with penalties
- Less than minimal crew – task wont be fulfilled at all.
Sailing, Gun reloads, Repairs, Leak fixing is atomized and all of them require a min or optimal squad. The crew requirement is the sum of individual crew requirements. Switches between crew focuses take time and the bigger your crew the more time it takes to re-position the squads from task to task. If you have full crew you can toggle optimal performance for all tasks.
All guns are loaded gun by gun if you have minimal gun crew.
How it works. Example: You first rate have lost most of the men and has 20 men left
Penalties and reload will depend on the gun composition of cannons for this particular vessel. If you have 20 men left and switched to a gunnery crew focus it will be enough to reload 2 heavy guns per minute allowing you to fire them individually. All guns have a minimum and optimal crew requirements and the gun composition for the vessel will become extremely important in battle.
- Equip lighter guns – you will have more flexibility in choices when you start losing crew.
- Equip heavier guns – you will have to manage the crew.
Repairs/Survival
If you have only 1 leak it will take only 5 men to repair and will not affect other sailor/gunner crew composition. If you have 90 leaking holes you will have to find 450 men to plug them in.
If you are repairing Victory you might need up to 30% of crew to repair 15% of the integrity (number is arbitrary at this stage).
Boarding
Boarding crew has to be allocated before the boarding. And the main difference with the old system is this: if you have enough men you can shoot guns and have boarders ready at the same time. Some ships with low number of guns will shine as a result – lynx is the best example. And it will allow you to board when you are sinking (sending some men to repairs and the rest to boarding party).

Man i lunghi cannoni

History
The USS constitution was one of six frigates ordered as result of privateering from the barbary pirates, most notably Algiers. The USS constitution was mostly built out of live oak and she was designed to have extremely heavy planking. The keel was laid down on the 1st of November 1794 in Boston Massachusetts. In march 1796 peace with Algiers was announced and construction halted as the act that ordered those ships also had in the terms that if peace with algiers happened the construction of these ships would halt, however washington got Congress to agree to continue to construct three of the ships nearest to completion of this class of ships, the United States, The Constellation and of course the Constitution. The Constitutions launch ceremony was held on 20 September 1797 and was attended by president John Adams. Upon launch she only slid about 8.2meters before stopping, her weight had caused the ways to settle into the ground. An attempt two days later got the ship 9.4m of travel. The ways had to be rebuild and after about a month the constitution was finally launched on 21st of October 1797.
War was declared on 18th of june in 1812 and Isaac Hull, the commander of the constitution at the time, set sail on 12th of July attempting to join five ships of a squadron under command of John Rodgers in the ship President. Hull sighted five ships off Egg Harbour, new Jersey on 17th of July and first believe them to be Rodgers Squadron. However the following morning the lookouts determined that they were a british squadron out of Halifax, the HMS Aeolus, Africa, Belvidera, Guerriere and Shannon had sighted the constitution and were giving chase. Finding himself becalmed hull acted on a suggestion and ordered the crew to put boats over the side to tow the ship out of range, using kedge anchors to draw the ship forwards and wetting the sails down to take advantage of every breath of wind. The british soon imitated the tactic and remained in pursuit. The resulting 57 hour chase in the July heat saw the crew of the Constitution employ a myriad of methods to the squadron, finally pumping overboard 2300 US Gallons of drinking water. Canon fire was exchanged several times though the british shots fell short or over their target. On 19 July the constitution pulled far enough ahead of the british that they abandoned the pursuit.
On the 18th of August a frigate was sighted, the HMS Guerriere. Upon entering within range the Guerriere fired upon the Constitution, however doing little damage. After a few exchanges of cannon fire between the ships Captain Hull maneuvered into an advantageous position and brought the constitution within 25 years of the Guerriere. The constitution fired a double loaded broadside of grape and round shot which took out the mizzenmast of the Guerriere. Guerrieres maneuverability decreased and she collided with the constitution. The Guerrieres bowspirit became entangled into the rigging of the constitution leaving only the bow guns capable of firing into the constitution. Hulls cabin caught fire due to the shots from the Guerriere however the crew was quickly able to extinguish the fire. Boarding parties aboard both ships were ordered, but the heavy seas prevented any boarding from actually happening. At one point the two ships rotated together counterclockwise with the constitution continuing to fire broadsides. When the two ships pulled apart the force of the bowspirits extraction caused the Guerrieres foremast to collaps and that brought the mainmast down soon after. Guerriere was now dismasted, had lost a third of her crew while the constitution remained largely intact, as such the Guerriere struck their colours. Many of Guerriers shots bounced harmlessly off the Constitutions hull, an american sailor reportedly exclaimed “Huzzah! Her sides are made of iron” and thus, the Constitution gained the nickname “Old ironsides”. The Guerriere was badly damaged and burned the day after.

Characteristics
The legendary USS Constitution is a highly popular ship in Naval Action. Currently she is the largest frigate in the game, both in size, armor and armament. She is almost the size of a 3rd rate ship-of-the-line, she is about just as long but not as tall. She behaves like a frigate in handling, as she can build up a good speed and is a bit maneuverable. However, she is not as manoeuvrable or fast as most other frigates. Despite this, she is the only frigate currently that can be armed with 24-pounder long and medium guns, giving her enough firepower to beat any frigate back with ease.
Her weakness is that she does not fare too well against the larger third-rates and first-rates operating in fleets, more commonly seen in Trafalgars and port battles. In a one on one engagement, a skilled commander in a Constitution can take on a rated ship of the line due to her better maneuverability and ability to absorb some damage, but this doesn’t apply to larger fight with ship-of-the-lines as the advantages of her frigate design will be overcome, and the Constitution will be out-damaged by the superior number of guns by the other ships-of-the-lines.
Here is the Sailing Profile of the Constitution. The Constitution expresses a stronger preference for sailing broad reach than any of the other frigates. She excels at point 150 and is comfortable between 135 and 165. This represents a slight shift from the smaller frigates, which typically perform best between points 135 and 150. The downside of this is that sailing anywhere near a beam reach is severely punished in terms of speed and sailing upwind is definitely not an enjoyable experience. Notably, the Constitution performs relatively better running with the wind than the other frigates, a quality not often noted by newly promoted Captains.
Ship Properties
Battle Rating
Battle rating (or in short: BR) is a value describing the combat power of a ship type. Battle rating is a fixed value for each ship type. Undercrewed ships will have a lower BR value. Upgrades have no effect on BR value.
Battle rating is an important value for rules of engagement and for port battles.
Guns
Do note, all the guns listed here and on the ships, respective pages are the broadside guns, this does not include any chasers the ship may or may not have
Broadside Weight
The Broadside weights are only for one broadside and it is calculated using the heaviest cannons or carronades that can be mounted
Ship armour
The ship armor is for a ship of oak wood type and no armor related modules, to see the armor of the ship you have to go into the ship page itself.
Ship Structure
The ship structure is for a ship of teak wood type and no structure related modules, to see the structure of the ship you have to go into the ship page itself.
History
(DISCLAIMER: This section describes the history of the original Wasa, not her upgraded sister ship, The Kronprins Gustaf Adolf (1782), on which is the ingame Wasa is based.)
Wasa was a Swedish 60 gun ship of the line , built in Karlskrona in 1778 by Fredrik Henrik af Chapman. She participated in the 1788 Russo-Swedish War, and fought at the battle of Hogland. She was sold in 1803 but re-purchased in 1808 and converted to a 50-gun ship. The Swedish East India Company took advantage of Wasa for a trip to Canton from 1803-1805. The crew was reduced as from 556 to 167 men. The ship was repurchased by the Navy in 1808 after her only trip for the East India Company.
Wasa is typical of many of Chapman’s innovative ideas. Because Sweden built its armed forces on close cooperation between its different branches, army, artillery and navy. They requested a ship built that was powerful enough to fight the long-drawn artillery duels in battle line that was the past practice, but could also contribute to support the coastal operations and landings.
Chapman’s idea was a ship that despite its small size could deliver great firepower . A smaller ship has the advantages that it is shallow and can navigate with more freedom and that the reduced water resistance gives greater maneuverability and speed. The low height also reduces the drift which helps the ship to keep the formation of a line and presents a smaller target for enemy shelling.
The result was a double-decker with space for 60 cannons. More traditionally built ships of the line at this time conducted usually 74 guns in three decks, and to compete with them they gave the ship a very powerful armament of 36- and 24-pounder guns. Chapman also invested in attaining high rigidity, with full sails set leaned ship no more than ten degrees at six to seven meters per second. With the addition highly placed lower gun deck were ship type a huge advantage in high winds and heavy seas.
The design, however, met some criticism from the fleet because the upper gun deck was almost completely unprotected, and therefore they did not think that the vessel could withstand the long hours of bombardment during a naval battle.
Wasa won over Sheldon Sofia Magdalena in test voyage and the ship became the Navy’s standard for many years to come. An order of ten ships of the line were placed and built between 1782-1785. To appease the fleet the ships were built somewhat larger and stronger with increased protection for the upper gun deck and were given an increased armament of 64 cannons.
