History
Due to how complex configuring mods to work together was, modpacks were created. One of the earliest modpacks was Technic, which was released in Beta 1.7. After being spotlighted by The Yogscast, it became very popular, and inspired further modpacks as well as the Technic launcher.
Over time, other platforms arose, including Feed The Beast and ATLauncher. Many, perhaps even most, players of modded Minecraft use modpacks rather than downloading and configuring mods manually.
Originally, most modpacks were «kitchen sink» modpacks; they included a number of mods designed to work together, but nothing more. Various modpacks with themes, custom maps, and goals rose over time, such as Feed The Beast Retro, Agrarian Skies, Infinity and Blightfall. Hardcore Questing Mode and similar mods have been frequently used to give modpacks a goal or a storyline.
Permissions
The original Technic modpack and sequel modpacks did not include express permission from the mod authors to redistribute their mods. This later became a problem when SirSengir introduced malicious code to make the Vindictive Bee destroy blocks around it when the mod jar was inside a «technic» folder. Later modpack platforms, including Feed The Beast and ATLauncher, required all modpacks to have permission from all mods inside their modpacks. Due to Curse, Inc. having permission to distribute all mods uploaded to CurseForge, all CurseForge modpacks created through mods hosted on CurseForge automatically have permission.
Although the legal status of modpacks requiring permission to distribute their mods has never been challenged in court, the general consensus is that it is legally required. Because mods are derivative works of Minecraft, Mojang has the right to regulate them. However, they still can be released under licenses that restrict distribution. Additionally, the use of mods without having express permission is generally seen as unethical in the modded community, although mod authors using restrictive licenses is also commonly frowned upon.
Installing the launcher
Twitch App Launcher
The steps above pertain to the legacy FTB launcher. FTB has switched support to the Twitch app, which can be downloaded here.
- Download the .exe or .app file from here.
- Navigate to the .exe or .app file on your computer and open it.
- Login with your Twitch credentials.
FTB Legacy Launcher
Once you have Minecraft successfully running on its own you are ready to install the FTB Launcher. The FTB Launcher is depreciated by FTB Team who instead recommend the Twitch Desktop App, but the latter currently doesn’t support Linux, and there are also a few older third-party modpacks that cannot be downloaded using the Twitch Desktop App yet.
- Browse to the FTB site and download the .exe or .jar from here.
- Put the .exe or .jar in its own folder somewhere on your computer.
- Run the .exe or .jar. It may take some time for it to configure itself the first time.
- Click on the OPTIONS tab and configure the installation location, memory settings, and window size/position.
- Create a profile using your Minecraft username (or Mojang e-mail) and password.
History

Feed The Beast was originally created as a custom challenge map, developed by a small team led by Slowpoke. It was announced on February 24th, 2012 on the Minecraft Forums. The map was a Sky Block map; the player spawned on a small platform in a void world, and must overcome a series of challenges. Using the tech mods in the modpack, these goals would be checked and give rewards automatically.
The map was adapted to allow multiple players to compete against each other in a race to complete the objectives. This version gained large popularity after being live-streamed on Twitch.tv with Direwolf20 competing against Mattabase, both very well known users of the mods included in the map.
After the map was released, the FTB Team decided to simplify the installation of the modpack by creating a launcher to automatically distribute the map, mods and configuration for those interested in playing it.
The map went through various iterations, including the bedrock map — known for the challenge and reward structure made of bedrock. However most players that refer to the «FTB map» mean the pyramid map, known for its large basalt pyramid that included various rooms that listed a set of items the player had to create in order to solve each challenge. That version was then updated to a harder version, known as FTB Insanity, which took many players 50 to even over 100 hours of play time to fully complete.

After hearing about many players using the modpack without playing the modpack, Slowpoke announced the creation of a new, general kitchensink modpack on August 13th, 2012 with a post on the Minecraft Forums.
An important feature of the new modpack was the solicitation of permissions from the mod developers prior to inclusion of that developer’s mods in the FTB modpack, which had previously caused Technic controversy.
The modpack was centered around mods built using Minecraft Forge. It initially focused on mods of a technical theme, such as IndustrialCraft 2, BuildCraft, and RedPower 2, but it expanded to include magic mods like Thaumcraft 3 and Mystcraft.
The initial mod pack was released as a beta in November 2012. It stayed in beta status for some time because of the necessity for mod authors to update their mods to Minecraft version 1.4, where everything became server based. This process proved a long road for a few of the mods that were core to the pack.
Other versions of the FTB modpack were created, including a Lite version, which slimmed down the list of mods to assist new users learn the ins and outs without being overwhelmed. A Magic World version, which focused on mods of a magical nature, was also released.
Many recent FTB modpacks include built-in quests with Hardcore Questing Mode, and some focus on other themes and difficulties. FTB Infinity Evolved contained two modes: a normal mode and an «Expert Mode». In the Expert Mode, several of the recipes of various blocks and items were modified, forcing players to progress through many mods’ tech trees in order to progress. FTB Infinity Evolved has sometimes been cited as the most popular Minecraft modpack in history.

Choosing a modpack
There are many FTB modpacks, as listed here. The Twitch Desktop App can also be used to install many other modpacks from other creators as well.
Twitch App
- Click on the «Mods» at the top sidebar, and then «Minecraft.» If it is not there, check if the app’s settings has mod management on for Minecraft. This will bring you to the profiles page.
- Click «Browse FTB Modpacks»
- Click on the desired modpack.
- Click «Install» by the top-left corner.
- Navigate back to the profiles page.
- Click «Play» to load up the Minecraft launcher.
- Enjoy playing Feed the Beast!
Installing an official pack
- In the launcher’s main window click on the «FTB MODPACKS» tab.
- Click on one of the packs on the left. The launcher will list the mods that make up that pack.
- Once you have chosen your pack click the «Launch» button.
