    • Polygroups are not optimized. The resulting model won’t have the original polygroups. This is because a model’s polygroups are dependent upon the points of its lowest resolution level. Decimation Master’s very purpose is to change the lowest resolution of the mesh, which will of course affect the polygroups.
    • If the model has been edited between the pre-process and the decimation, you must re-launch a pre-process. If not, the decimation will be based on the original model. In case you are not sure, do a new pre-process.
    • If a model has been pre-processed in a previous ZBrush session and you load in a new session a different ZTool with the same name (for example: PM3D_sphere) it is necessary to do a new pre-process or any decimation will be based on the previous ZTool.
    • After you optimize, if ZBrush is displaying a different SubTool from the one you just processed it’s because these SubTools have the same name. To solve this problem, rename the SubTools and pre-process them again. Another solution is to delete the caches by clicking the plugin’s Utilities >> Delete Caches button.
    • If you decide to kill the Decimation Master process in your operating system’s process manager, ZBrush won’t be affected. However, the ZScript which is working with the plugin will continue to run and keep the focus over the application. To stop the ZScript, press the ESC key. You may have a remaining progress bar which is just an artifact of the process you just killed.

Download and install Decimation

There are several different methods to download and install Decimation. The most common method is via Curseforge, alternatives exist with the Technic launcher and the Twitch launcher.

Installing the Decimation mod via Curseforge is quite simple if you are used to installing mods via Forge. You will have to download the .jar file of the mod and place it manually in a Forge installation of your Minecraft environment:

  1. Start by installing Minecraft Forge version 1.7.10
  2. Download the latest version of the Decimation mod from Curseforge
  3. Drag the downloaded .jar file to the /mods folder

This is the classic procedure to install a Minecraft mod, all the details to do so can be found on our page dedicated to Minecraft Forge. If you want to use the twitch or technic launcher, follow the official tutorial.

Temporary files

The Decimation plugin uses temporary files for two purposes:

    • The first purpose is to reduce the amount of memory overhead, thus increasing the number of polygons that can be handled by this decimation process.
    • The second reason is to let you reload a previously pre-processed ZTool and decimate it directly, without the need for another time consuming pre-process phase.

If you don’t need to decimate a ZTool anymore you can choose to delete these temporary files by pressing the “Delete Caches” button in the utilities section.

Note: These files can become quite large on very high polygon meshes. ZBrush won’t automatically delete these files when quitting, so don’t forget to delete them from time to time.

Mon jeu me affiche une erreur « Out of Memory » ! Pourquoi ?

Some parameters of Decimation Master have been moved in the Preferences palette. This makes the default behaviors easier to understand. Change these settings only if you have very specific needs.

Uniform Mesh

This option keeps a constant aspect to the decimated polygons by creating a kind of uniform decimation defined by areas, like low details and high details. Activating this option can slightly change the result of your decimation.

On the left, the original model. On the middle, the default mode. On the right, the Uniform Mesh mode.

Number of Threads

This slider lets you choose how many threads you want to use, based on your computer’s processor. The Decimation Master plugin is multithreaded, and it will use your computer’s resources as much as possible to improve the computing time. Reducing this number will increase the pre-process time but will allow you to work on other tasks at the same time.

Delete caches at start

This option lets you definie the behavior of the plugin regarding the temporary files in its data cache. (Explained in an earlier section.) These files can take a lot of disk space if you never clean them. This option when activated will erase all the temporary files on ZBrush Startup. If you would like to decimate a ZTool or Subtool(s) in multiple sessions without having to pre-process again uncheck this setting.

Save Preferences

Click on this button to store the plugin preferences. Using the ZBrush default “Store Config” function won’t save the Decimation Master plugin preferences.

64-bit Decimator

This preference is activated by default when ZBrush is running on a 64 bit system. Then when in action, Decimation Master will use all the memory available for the pre process which is very useful when decimating a model and keeping its UVs.

Notes: The Decimation Master preferences are not bound to ZBrush ones. You don’t need to do a Store Config to save them. They are automatically saved in the DecimationMaster.cfg file, located in the DecimationMaster Data folder.

FAQ about the Decimation mod

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the decimation mod, along with the reasoning and explanations.

How do I update to the latest version of Decimation ?

In the main menu, click on the “Settings” button, then on the “Force-Update” button. If you don’t click on the update button, it is likely that updates are disabled in your decimation-client configuration file.

I have installed the latest version, but it tells me that there is an update ! Why is this ?

If this is the first time you are installing Decimation, it probably indicates that there is an update because you need to install the external modification of Decimation Voice Chat, which is a separate .jar file. Just update once more and it shouldn’t ask you again.

My game crashes when I update Decimation ! Why does this happen ?

Technically, this is not a crash. Your game closes after you download and install the latest version of Decimation so you can restart it and play. To solve this problem, just restart the game and you will have the latest version of Decimation.

My game crashes when I join a server or a single player world! Why does this happen ?

This error may occur if you are using Optifine with Decimation, or if you have already played Minecraft on a later version of the game. Try removing Optifine, or deleting your options.txt file.

My game shows me an “Out of Memory” error! Why does it happen ?

This problem occurs when you have not allocated enough RAM. You can allocate more RAM to your game (at least 2-3 GB) via your launcher settings.

I was disconnected with the error “Modified Files” ! Why ?

Make sure you have the latest version of Decimation, especially if you want to play on the official servers. You can check the version of your game from the window title or the main menu of the game. The servers will not allow you to join if you have other mods installed (not to mention several allocations).

Please make sure you do not have any other mods installed on your game. You should make sure that there are only 2 files in your Mods folder: Decimation.jar and DecimationVoiceChat.jar. If you have other mods, folders or files in your /mods/ folder, they will be included when the anti-cheat scans your game. Please also make sure you are not using a 1.7.10 folder in your /mods/ folder.

If you want to locally reduce the decimation on your model, you can use Masks. It’s a good solution to protect specific areas of your mesh if you want to keep the maximum quality of your details.

You can also change the intensity of the Mask to partially protect an area.

On the top, the ZTool with some parts which have been Masked – the right Mask is at 100%, the others at 58% of intensity. On the middle, the result of the decimation with the Masks. on the bottom, the same decimation without the Masks.

Decimating a model with or without a Mask will result in the same polygon count. Masking simply provides a simple way to control the density of the decimated model’s polygons in specific parts of the model.

The plugin can work on the ZTool and its SubTools. You can decimate the current SubTool or all visible SubTools.
However, working on all SubTools at once for the decimation process means that the same quality value will be applied to all SubTools.

Sometimes, depending on the visual aspect and the details of a model, it’s better to work on each SubTool individually after Pre-processing (see below) and apply different quality settings to each. You can then recombine the new models together using the Tool >> SubTool >> Append feature.

Preparing the Model

Before decimating your ZTool, you can prepare your model using the ZBrush features described below. This will change the decimation’s outcome.

The plugin supports your ZTool’s default symmetry. If you want a symmetric decimated result, then define the model’s symmetry plane by using Transform >> Activate Symmetry to choose the desired axis.

The vertices on the symmetry plane will be decimated like other vertices and won’t be frozen, to improve the decimation vertex count.

Partial Symmetry is supported and the Plugin will try to keep the decimation as symmetrical as possible like shown by the orange arrow on the picture below.

If you define a symmetry plane which does not match the model’s symmetry, the decimation process can take more time because the internal process will check for a symmetry plane which doesn’t exist. The result will be an asymmetrical decimation, but not a failure in the result.
