Enemy Detection[]

Abyss enemies have their own player detection system independent from enemy aggro, with a default detection radius and a reduced detection radius. Once an enemy has detected the player, it will not stop chasing them until it gets killed, moves too far from the player, or the player dies. Using either Anechoic Coating or Anechoic Plating will reduce enemy detection radii, these effects do not stack. Most enemies will detect the player regardless of distance if they are damaged.

Enemy Detection Radius (tiles) Reduced Detection Radius (tiles)
Viperfish 37.5 12.5
Moray Eel 18.75 15.625
Laserfish 25 12.5
Giant Squid 31.25 18.75
Oarfish 15.625 9.375
Bobbit Worm 12.5 3.125
Gulper Eel 37.5 12.5
Colossal Squid 18.75 9.375
Reaper Shark 31.25 18.75

Additionally, enemy detection radii will be:

  • Multiplied by 3 if the player has the Fish Alert debuff.
  • Multiplied by 0.65 if the player is wearing the Abyssal Mirror.
  • Multiplied by 0.3 if the player is wearing the Eclipse Mirror.

Afterlife[]

Main article: Afterlife

Beliefs about the journey of souls to the afterlife changed with the shifting cosmologies and the crystal sphere in which one resided. In some worlds, chaotic evil souls would travel directly to the Abyss and become manes, the lowest form of sub-demon. Manes were treated as slaves, cannon fodder, and food by the demon lords. For mortals of Realmspace, however, all souls would first go to the Fugue Plane and await transport to their final resting place. Greedy demon lords would open a portal to the Fugue Plane and conduct raids to steal souls and bring them back to the Abyss to become manes. After the Spellplague, Shar reshaped the Plane of Shadow and folded in what death energy did not get absorbed into the Elemental Chaos and created the Shadowfell. After that, souls on their way to the afterlife started their journey in the Shadowfell and most made it to the Fugue Plane to await judgment, but a few remained behind or were lost.

Special Locusts[]

  • 120 Volt / Jacob’s Ladder: A pale blue locust with arcs of electricity that deal 0.1 damage per tick.
  • Blood of the Martyr: A red locust that deals double damage.
  • Brimstone: A gray, larger locust that is otherwise normal.
  • The Common Cold / Scorpio / The Virus: A green locust that poisons enemies.
  • Cricket’s Head: A red locust that is larger and deals triple damage.
  • Fire Mind: An orange, burning locust that sets enemies on fire.
  • Halo of Flies: Two gray locusts that deal half damage.
  • Holy Light: A cyan, glowing locust that occasionally calls down beams of light onto enemies they hit that deal 3x Isaac’s damage.
  • The Inner Eye: Three normal locusts.
  • Ipecac: A large, slow, green locust that deals x1.5 Isaac’s damage and poisons enemies.
  • Mutant Spider: Four normal locusts.
  • Number One: A yellow locust that is faster, deals damage more quickly, but has shorter range.
  • Spoon Bender: A purple locust that homes in on enemies.

Abilities[]

Unbound

Unlike the other Narehate, Faputa is not able to enter the village of Ilblu and can instead move freely around the rest of the 6th layer.

Physical Strength

She is extremely agile and possesses an impressive amount of physical strength, being able to restrict Reg with only two hands.

Transformation

Faputa appears to have attributed transformative abilities, as seen when Faputa’s white hair and fur envelops her, which enables her to travel through the air in a ghostly manner similar to smoke. She can also transport others with her in this state, given that they are small enough for her to grab hold of and envelop.

Furthermore, she displayed to be able to adjust her form and has a very supple and flexible spine that can bend freely.

Immortality

While in the vicinity of the village’s boundary, Faputa is able to have her wounds healed by the same a thick dark gooey liquid Juroimoh used after his transformation, which she proclaims to be her siblings and it continuously heals injuries she sustains while she is in range of it. Furthermore, she is unaffected by the balancing. She also displayed to be able to regenerate and seemingly grow stronger by the Ilblu inhabitants willingly giving up the value of their bodies to her and she consuming it.

Internal Balancing

After having taken in the value of the villagers’ bodies, Faputa seems to be able to bring forth the balancing from within herself when harmed to heal her injuries and causing damage to the one who harmed in the the process.

Telepathic Communication

Faputa is seemingly able to communicate with beings unable to speak as she is able to understand signals from Prushka as a Whistle and also is able to communicate with Vueko after the affects of the Curse of the Abyss rendered her unable speak.

Layers[]

An artist’s rendering of the Abyss

Main article: Layers of the Abyss

The number of layers in the Abyss was unknown and perhaps unknowable, but this article attempts to list them regardless of which cosmology model was in favor at the time of discovery. Each layer had its own characteristics, which were as varied as the demons themselves. All types of terrain, atmosphere, weather, gravity, and material composition were represented in the myriad layers. Some examples were:

  • —zero gravity, no matter except air
  • Ash—blowing dunes of ashes
  • Battleground—Blood War or other
  • City—warrens and slums to citadels and palaces, teeming with demons
  • —solid rock tunneled by the inhabitants
  • —everburning flames with salamanders, etc.
  • Delusion—appears to be Normal but the flowers are poisonous or the trees attack
  • Desert—endless tracts of black, white, or red sand with no water
  • Glacier—infinite black, white, or orange ice with few rocky peaks breaking the surface
  • Hellscape—a burning mix of magma, rock, and belching brimstone
  • Maelstrom—swirling, bubbling chaos like Limbo
  • Mountainous—rocky crags, precipitous cliffs, soaring peaks
  • —major or minor
  • Normal—similar to a Prime plane with various flora and fauna
  • Ocean—a trackless ocean, with a surface
  • Salt—crystalline badlands or desert
  • Sea—of acid, blood, garbage, insects, oil, or worms, etc.
  • Swamp—noisome bog inhabited by predators
  • Undead—specters, spooks, and ghosts
  • Volcanic—lava flows, earthquakes, volcanoes, and smoke
  • —nightmarish creatures in the murk

Breath[]

The breath meter drains faster in the Abyss, with each deeper layer applying more severe breath loss. Players with zero breath in the Abyss will lose health far more rapidly than if they were drowning in normal water. Finally, the Crush Depth debuff is commonly inflicted by enemies in the Abyss and causes the player’s breath to drain even quicker. These conditions make underwater breathing equipment a necessity for players wishing to explore the Abyss.

The first layer of the Abyss reduces the player’s breath by 2 every tenth of a second, resulting in a net loss of 20 breath per second. Each layer beyond the first reduces the player’s breath three times as quickly as the previous: the second layer takes away 60 breath per second, the third layer takes away 180, and the fourth takes away 540.

The Abyss ignores all items that normally grant permanent underwater breathing, such as the Gills Potion, Neptune’s Shell, and the Ocean Crest. These items are still useful as they separately help reduce the breath loss the Abyss applies to the player.

Breath loss rate

The following items reduce how frequently the Abyss takes breath away from the player. These effects add together to create an overall delay multiplier that slows down the Abyss’ breath loss:

  • Gills buff or Ocean Crest: +4
  • Any item which lets the player ignore water physics, as listed below: +5
  • The Absorber
  • The Amalgam
  • Aquatic Heart
  • Auric Tesla Royal Helm
  • Auric Tesla Hooded Facemask
  • Auric Tesla Wire-Hemmed Visage
  • Auric Tesla Space Helmet
  • Auric Tesla Plumed Helm
  • Bloodflare Horned Helm
  • Bloodflare Hydra Hood
  • Bloodflare Imp Mask
  • Bloodflare Ram Mask
  • Bloodflare Wyvern Helm
  • Fin Wings (Also inherits Gills)
  • Fishron Wings
  • Flipper Potion
  • Hardy Saddle
  • Leviathan Ambergris
  • Mollusk Shellmet
  • Omega Blue Helmet
  • Reaver Helm
  • Reaver Visage
  • Reaver Mask
  • Reaver Helmet
  • Reaver Headgear
  • Sea Shell
  • Shrimpy Truffle
  • Sulphurous armorSet bonus
  • The Sponge
  • Tarragon Helm
  • Tarragon Visage
  • Tarragon Mask
  • Tarragon Horned Helm
  • Tarragon Helmet
  • Victide armorSet bonus
  • A full set of Victide armor: +10 (ignores water physics and adds +5 on its own)
  • Diving Helmet, Diving Gear, or Jellyfish Diving Gear: +10
  • Aquatic Emblem: +14 (inherits Gills and adds +10 on its own)
  • Neptune’s Shell, Moon Shell, or Celestial Shell: +15
  • Aquatic Heart after Skeletron has been defeated: +20 (ignores water physics and adds +15 on its own)
  • Arctic Diving Gear or Abyssal Diving Gear: +20 (inherits Diving Helmet and adds +10 on its own)
  • Abyssal Diving Suit: +39 (inherits Abyssal Diving Gear and Gills and adds +15 on its own)

The delay multiplier is capped at 50. The Abyss takes away breath times more slowly from the player.

Breath loss amount

The following items reduce the quantity of breath taken away by the Abyss. These effects do not multiply together. Rather, they add onto each other and create an overall percentage to reduce the Abyss’ breath loss by:

  • Gills buff, Ocean Crest, or Fin Wings: -20%
  • A full set of Victide armor: -20%
  • Diving Helmet, Diving Gear, or Jellyfish Diving Gear: -25%
  • Aquatic Emblem: -45% (inherits Gills and adds -25% on its own)
  • Neptune’s Shell, Moon Shell, or Celestial Shell: -15%
  • Aquatic Heart after Skeletron has been defeated: -30%
  • Arctic Diving Gear or Abyssal Diving Gear: -50% (inherits Diving Helmet and adds -25% on its own)
  • Abyssal Diving Suit: -100% (inherits Abyssal Diving Gear and Gills and adds -30% on its own)

This percentage reduction is capped at 95%. At this cap, the Abyss removes 20 times less breath from the player.

Drowning damage

A player drowning in the Abyss takes extra damage in addition to the vanilla game’s health drain from drowning. More precisely, the Abyss reduces the player’s health instead of their breath if their breath meter is empty. With no relevant equipment, drowning in the Abyss deals an extra 30 damage per second in Layer 1, 60 damage per second in Layer 2, 120 damage per second in Layer 3, and 240 damage per second in Layer 4. This damage is reduced by 30 per second if the Depths Charm or Abyssal Diving Gear is equipped; this damage is further reduced by 60 damage per second if the Abyssal Diving Suit is equipped. The extra drowning damage dealt by the Abyss is slowed down by all items which reduce the rate of breath loss.

Appearance[]

Ozen is a very tall and rather slim woman who stands over 2 meters in height. She has a strangely shaped monochrome hairstyle that conceals the scalp deformations caused by the intensive exposure to the Curse of the Abyss.

Her eyes are pitch black and lusterless, giving her a rather unsettling and disturbing gaze. When fully equipped for delving, she wears bulky armor and a disc-shaped hat that covers her eyes.

Her White Whistle is adorned with a pair of horns, giving it a bovine appearance. Despite being more than half a century old, she appears quite youthful, with only her white hair showing her age.

Trivia[]

  • The theme that is heard while in the 1st and 2nd layers of the Abyss is Hadopelagic Pressure, which was composed by the artist DM DOKURO

If the Calamity Music add-on mod is disabled, The Underworld’s theme will play through all layers of the Abyss instead.

    .

  • The theme that is heard while in the 3rd layer of the Abyss is R’LYEH, which was made by wiki editor RoverdriveX.
    • The name is a reference to the sunken city of R’lyeh, in H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Call of Cthulhu”, which fits well with the Cthulhu themed bosses.
    • It was intended to be just a placeholder but was kept due to positive reception from the community.
  • The theme that is heard while in the 4th layer of the Abyss is void, which was also composed by the artist DM DOKURO.
  • Some of the creatures in the Abyss are based on the game Subnautica, though most are based on real-life ocean creatures.
  • If the player drowns in the Abyss, the death message will either appear as «<PlayerName> is food for the Wyrms.» or «Oxygen failed to reach <PlayerName> from the depths of the Abyss.»
  • The Abyss generates under the Dungeon-side Ocean in order to prevent conflict with the Thorium Mod’s Aquatic Depths biome, which always generates under the Jungle-side Ocean.
  • The Abyss and the Sulphurous Sea are comparable to the Pelagic zone, the way the ocean’s layers are categorized, with the Sulphurous Sea being the Epipelagic Zone, the first layer of the abyss being the Mesopelagic Zone, the second layer being the Bathypelagic Zone, the third layer being the Abyssopelagic Zone, and the fourth and final one being the Hadopelagic Zone

Hadopelagic Pressure does not play in the 4th layer even though it is considered the Hadopelagic Zone.
